The event was held on “Buy Nothing Day,” and was intended to raise awareness about sustainable alternatives to a culture of consumption. Close Guantanamo
Amnesty International organized simultanious demonstrations in major cities around the world to call on the United States to close Guantanimo Bay Prison, where several prinsoners have been held without charges for several years. Amnesty International is particularly concerned about the treatement prisoners have recieved in the prison. Official reports from the United Nations and the International Red Cross have indicated that interrogation techniques and detention conditions in the prison violate the international prohibition on torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. Amnesty International insists that the US governments should “close Guantánamo and … charge detainees with recognized crimes and bring them to trial under fair trial procedures or else release them with full protections against further abuses … In the meantime the US government should ensure that all detainees are treated in accordance with international law and standards, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and other international instruments relevant to the treatment of persons deprived of liberty.”

The Supreme Court of Canada has since ruled the “Security sertificate” system unconstitutional and only Hasan Almrei remains emprisoned. The prisoners were held for up to seven years under conditions that earned the prison the nickname “Guantanamo Bay North.” Many of the prisoners went on hunger strike for several days to demand fair trials.
